Los Muertos El Caballero logo on Black Hoodie
For some time, Project X has paid tribute to Día de los Muertos via our ‘Día de los Deadlifts’ design. We now proudly offer our very first design for the holiday itself. Our good friend John Culqui provides the artwork. I’ve often shared my personal perspective and history on this cultural experience. Below, Marina shares her own experiences with the holiday. As always, we hope our stories inspire you to learn more about Dia de los Muertos - Todd
When I think of Día de los Muertos, I think about my grandmother, mi Mamá Bea, who passed in 1999. I spent many summers with her in Durango, México and traveled back for her funeral which coincided with the holiday that year. I was in awe as the city was so alive with color and love. Celebrations for Día de los Muertos had begun.
Decorations were everywhere and enormous altars rose near the Cathedral. All the neighborhood Iglesias (churches) had músicos, food, and dancing. Visiting the panteón (cemetery) where Mamá Bea was laid to rest is a site I will never forget. Like vibrant rays of sunshine, the orange cempasuchiles (marigolds) were everywhere. This was my first experience with death and yet the sadness I felt was not what I had expected. It truly was a celebration of the life she had lead, as the matriarch of our family. Love dominated the day as we laughed, hugged, and shared stories of our family members who had passed.
As a first generation Mexican American, I’m proud that we can continue and share these traditions with others. I’ve been able to take part in a few celebrations here in the Bay Area and they all provide their own unique experience while focusing on the pride it brings you to honor those loved ones and to one day have the hope of reuniting again.
The design also features our Project X logo on the rear neck.
